Oakham School has a long and distinguished history, having been established in 1584, and is highly regarded in the UK. The school upholds a proactive attitude, striving to create a forward-thinking campus that encourages students to step out of their comfort zones. Oakham School has consistently achieved outstanding success in non-academic areas, nurturing students to excel not only in their studies but also in various other fields.<\/p>\n

Academic standards are high across the school, which offers an extensive choice of GCSEs and A-levels, with an excellent success rate of pupils going on to their first choice university. We ensure every individual is nurtured to achieve their potential, and they are prepared for life in a rapidly changing global society. Although we are a non-select school our pupils thrive, whether needing support or highly academic. The College opened on 27 October 1879 at Dane Park House as South Eastern College with just 5 pupils under the leadership of Rev E C D\u2019Auquier as an Evangelical establishment with the purpose of combining \u201ccareful religious training with a sound, liberal education\u201d.<\/p>\n

Significant founders were Dean Payne-Smith of Canterbury, Mr John Deacon (Chairman of Deacon\u2019s Bank) and the Rev J B Whiting (Vicar of St Luke\u2019s, Ramsgate). In October 1884, when a new Main Building was opened, the number of pupils had risen to 125. The College was incorporated as a Public School in 1892.<\/p>\n

An extension was added to the Main Building in 1896 and the four Houses and a Cadet Corps were created. Sixty acres of land were purchased, thus providing the school with excellent playing fields. In October 1905 the Archbishop of Canterbury opened the Tower (erected in memory of Mr John Deacon), which completed the Main Building of the Senior School.<\/p>\n

In September 1906 the College adopted its new name: St Lawrence. In 1916, due to the risk of air raids and naval bombardment during the First World War, the College was evacuated to Chester and the Ramsgate buildings were used as a hospital for Canadian soldiers. Oakham School offers a traditional A-Level curriculum for students with clear academic goals, while also providing BTEC and Pre-U courses to cater to students’ individual strengths. Students from international schools in Hong Kong can directly opt for the IB program, making the transition smoother. The school’s career planning department is highly acclaimed in the UK, having won numerous awards such as the Career Mark Award. Boarding at Oakham is an exciting experience, filled with unmatched opportunities and the chance to make friends for life. Our exceptional pastoral care team ensures that pupils feel safe and well looked-after throughout their time at the School.<\/p>\n

Around half of the School\u2019s pupils are full boarders.<\/p>\n

Each of our Boarding Houses is also home to the Housemaster or Housemistress and their families, so the pupils are very much part of their extended family. The Housemaster or Housemistress is supported by two Resident Tutors, a Matron, and tutors who do evening duties in House, in addition to their work with their tutor group. Together with the wider support network of chaplaincy, medical centre, cleaning and ground staff, there is a strong and caring team of adults working to provide for every pupil\u2019s needs, whatever they may be and however they may change over their time with us.<\/p>\n

All pupils eat together in the Barraclough Dining Hall, which is open for breakfast, lunch and supper every day of the week.
